These twelve simple spelling rules are here to help you.
They are OFTEN but NOT always true!
1. When an
i comes before gh in a word,
it is usually long as in the word flight.
2. The
ch sound can be spelled tch as in witch.
3. Each
syllable of a word must contain one sounded vowel - el-e-phant.
4. The
consonants c and
g are sometimes soft before i, e, and y as in center and gentle.
5. Remember, i
comes before e except after c as in receive. Exceptions include neighbor and weigh.
6.
When
2 vowels are together, remember the rhyme, "When two vowels go walking
the first one does the talking." An example would be tne word coat.
7. The
gh combination is usually silent as in bright. Sometimes it sounds like f as in laugh.
8. To make a word plural, add s or es as in girls or brushes. To add es to a word that ends in a blend such as: -sh, -ch, -th or an x
19. To add the suffixes ed or ing to the end of a word which ends in e, take away the e and add your new suffix.
10. To make a word plural when it ends with a y proceed by a conconent, change the y to an i and add es.
11. To add the suffixes ed or ing to a word that ends in y, change the y to an i and add your new suffix.
12. To add a suffix to the end of a word that ends in a consonant, double the consonant and then add the suffix. The word shop then changes to shopping.
